In Alberta most civil claims must be started within two years of the day you knew (or should have known) that you had a claim. Some matters, such as claims against a municipality or certain insurance disputes, have much shorter notice periods. If you are anywhere near a deadline, call rather than read.
Some matters are billed hourly, some as a flat fee (real estate, wills, notarizations), and serious injury matters are often taken on a contingency basis, meaning our fee comes out of the recovery. At the first meeting we explain which applies to your matter and what the realistic range is, in writing.
Get medical attention and keep every record. Photograph the scene, the vehicles and your injuries. Get the other party's insurance details and the names of witnesses. Report to your own insurer, but do not give a recorded statement about fault or sign a release before you have spoken to a lawyer.
An employer in Alberta can usually end employment without cause, but must give reasonable notice or pay in lieu of it. And the statutory minimum is often far below what you are actually owed. Do not sign a release for a severance offer before someone has reviewed it.
Defamation claims turn on what exactly was published, to whom, and when. Preserve the evidence immediately: full-page screenshots with the URL and the date visible, and any messages about it. Posts get deleted, and deleted posts are far harder to prove.
